Exploiting Olive Mill Wastewater via Thermal Conversion of the Organic Matter into Gaseous Biofuel—A Case Study

چکیده
Olive oil is one excellence of the Italian food industry: around 300 kt yr−1 are produced, creating roughly same amount olive mill wastewater (OMW) to be disposed of. The present work describes a process exploit OMW by converting its organic compounds valuable gaseous biofuel. A sample was characterized (COD, TOC, solids, and polyphenols) submitted membrane filtration tests concentrate compounds. Based on results experiments, treatment outlined: retentate streams from microfiltration ultrafiltration steps were fed cracking steam reforming reactor, respectively; obtained syngas then mixed sent methanation reactor. simulated with Aspen Plus (AspenTech©) software, assessing operating conditions compositions: final biofuel 81 mol.% methane, 4 hydrogen, 11 carbon dioxide. permeate stream cannot directly of, but both polluting charge greatly reduced. heat needed process, mainly due endothermic reactions, can burning an pomaces, corresponding one-third left treatments giving rise processed feed.

Composting of the solid fraction of olive mill wastewater with olive leaves: organic matter degradation and biological activity.
The flocculated solid fraction of olive mill wastewaters, obtained from two different olive oil extraction systems (FOMW1 and FOMW2) was composted, with olive leaves (OL) as bulking agent, by the static pile system (Rutgers). The dynamic of organic matter (OM) degradation during composting and its relationship with the basal respiration and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolytic activity, as in...
متن کاملInoculum acclimation to oleate promotes the conversion of olive mill wastewater to methane
This work aims at selecting a suitable strategy to accelerate the start-up of the anaerobic treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW) and to enhance the biogas production. Two anaerobic sludges were tested in toxicity and biodegradability batch experiments: biomass acclimated to oleate (BAO) and biomass non-acclimated (BNA). The results showed that the resistance to OMW toxicity was higher for t...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Activity of Olive Mill Waters (Alpechin) and Biotransformed Mill Wastewater Waste- Olive Oil
Olive oil extraction produces a great volume of residue. These olive mill wastes are known as alpechin. This wastewater is a powerful pollutant, resistant to degradation and presents a severe environmental problem related to its high organic content made up largely of simple phenolic compounds, that have been described as being both antimicrobial and phytotoxic. This paper reviews briefly the a...
